Described by Lonely Planet as Japan's Olympics of fireworks, the Omagari Hanabi has a history spanning more than a century. The best pyrotechnicians from around the country gather in the city of Daisen, Akita Prefecture, to show off their skills with an array of incredible firework displays set to music.
The overall winner of the event receives the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award, which is only given at one other fireworks event (Ibaraki's Tsuchiura Fireworks Festival).
The event draws in hundreds of thousands of spectators each year, so anticipate crowds if you plan to attend.
Public ticket information
Tickets for the 2025 event will go on sale for two periods: June 13–24 and July 22–31. Please visit the official site for detailed ticket information (Ja). Tickets will be sold through Lawson and Eplus.
Getting there
The event takes place around 30 minutes on foot from JR Omagari Station, served by the Akita Shinkansen, the Ōu Main Line, and the Tazawako Line.
For those who opt to drive, take the Omagari Interchange on the Akita Expressway. On-site parking is available but is limited, so visiting via public transport is recommended.
