The Tokyo Midtown Complex sits on the western edge of the city’s Roppongi neighborhood. Opened in 2007, the complex hosts a variety of shops, restaurants and world-class museums, as well as the Ritz Carlton Hotel.
To many, Tokyo Midtown is known for its top art installations. The Suntory Museum on the complex’s third floor curates an impressive selection of Japanese ceramics, lacquerware and painting. While there is no permanent collection on display, the museum hosts a selection of temporary thematic exhibitions each year. Behind the Midtown complex, the 21_21 Design Sight museum was born out of a collaboration between architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake (who also has a boutique in the complex’s main building. It features a rotating selection of temporary exhibits, mostly focusing on design.
Tokyo Midtown is a popular shopping destination and boasts some of the city’s best boutique clothing outlets. The lower level of the complex is also home to popular clothing and lifestyle chains Uniqlo and Muji. For those seeking a taste of Japan to take home with them, several shops on the 3rd floor carry a curated selection of high-quality crafts.
Many popular food outlets maintain a shop in the basement level of Tokyo Midtown. Fans of traditional sweets should stop in to Toraya, a longtime purveyor of wagashi to the Imperial Family, while those who like to blend ancient and modern sensibilities will love the unique flavors of pâtissier Sadaharu Aoki. For a lighter snack, opt for an all-fruit ice bar from Kamakura-based Paletas. There are also restaurants serving noodles, ochazuke, tempura and fish dishes; many of them set out take-away bento boxes over the lunch and dinner hours.
Tokyo Midtown is well-known for its holiday illuminations. Each year, from the end of November to the beginning of January, the grounds behind the Midtown complex glow with thousands of LED lights in ever-changing patterns.
Additional seasonal and cultural celebrations are also held on the grounds throughout the year. Early spring brings out the cherry-blossomed theme entertainments across the complex, while May sees the arrival of numerous carp streamers over the stream that runs along the property’s western edge.
Tokyo Midtown is easily reached by the Oedo metro line, which has an exit directly into the basement of the complex. The site is also within easy walking distance of the Hibiya and Chiyoda lines.
