The Goto Islands, west of mainland Kyushu, spread into the East China Sea and hold a history distinct from that of other parts of Japan. Visit and find out why twenty-nine unique little churches dot this little island of 20,000 people, with one of them being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kamigoto attracts visitors also for its scenic landscapes and traditional cuisine. Some of the best beaches in Japan are here, and the coasts are beautiful for water sports. Try out the excellent food and drink—but go a step further and learn to prepare it yourself!
Rural Kamigoto is isolated but easily accessible from Fukuoka, Nagasaki, and Sasebo. There’s an airport near Kashiragashima Church. The ferries offer a comfortable ride with agreeable scenery as you move out of the big city ports, over the low waves with sea birds and flying fish, and up to the alluring crags and deep green hills of the islands.
